The phenomenon of downgrading, downsizing, and degazettement of protected areas in the region of the Brazilian Amazon over the last 15 years
Lea Matscheroth
Brazil, as the country with the largest Protected Area (PA) system in the world (Chiaravalloti et al. 2015), is a fascinating case for evaluating recent developments regarding the increase of Protected Area Downgrading, Downsizing and Degazettement (PADDD) events, as well as the even bigger pressure on PAs in the near future brought about by recent economic proposals. An important issue in this context is the current political situation in Brazil and its lack of focus on environmental policy. This study will evaluate the recent number of PAs affected by PADDD and the underlying drivers.
