Geographisches Kolloquium
Dr. Arshiya Bose
Black Baza Coffee
Can a coffee company conserve biodiversity in India's Western Ghats?
In this talk, Arshiya will draw on her academic research and on-ground experience to share Black Baza Coffee's work on conserving biodiversity on smallholder coffee farms. Bridging academic research with grassroots action, Arshiya founded Black Baza Coffee in 2016 to build a social and conservation enterprise that partners with smallholder coffee producers in India's Western Ghats biodiversity hotspot.
This work, spanning nearly a decade, has now extended to working with 650 smallholder producers to develop a participatory approach that conserves biodiversity, protects local ecosystems, and strengthens livelihoods. Through this model, participating farmers have begun restoring native tree species on their coffee farms, seen an increase in income and reduction in household debt. This work led Black Baza to become the first and only Indian organisation to win the Specialty Coffee Association's Global Sustainability Award in 2025.
