Research Visit Kenya, August to December 2019

Report by Alina Oswald, PhD student at the Institute for Asian and African Studies, Humboldt-Universität zu Berlin

From August to December I visited Kenya to complete my first research phase within my Ph.D. project which concerns the history of automobility in Kenya. Through the EAGER Trans-Net program I obtained funding by Erasmus+ and was subsequently affiliated with the University of Nairobi. Prof. Wahome and Dr. Ombongi (Department of History & Archaeology) as well as Dr. Maranga-Musonye (Department of Literature) gave valuable advice throughout my stay. During the four months I worked in the Kenya National Archives and in other archives in Nairobi, the Coast and Nyanza regions. Apart from examining administrative sources, I extended my research network and conducted interviews with other historians, mechanics, drivers and urban planners. It has been immensely gratifying to complete the research stay within the EAGER Trans-Net framework.
