"Analyzing Greenhouse Expansion in Almeria, SE Spain"

Abstract
The Province of Almeria in SE Spain is one of the principal production sites of vegetables for the European market. What used to be a non-arable semi-desert has been converted into a hotspot of intensive agriculture within less than 50 years. The most evident feature of this land use change has been the appearance of plastic greenhouses which cover an area of more than 30.000 hectares nicknamed the 'sea of plastic' and its harsh social and ecological impacts. The aim of my master thesis is to analyze the expansion dynamics of the 'sea of plastic' using a Landsat time series consisting of 10+ time steps covering a period of more than 30 years. A spectral index is proposed on the basis of which the change detection is conducted.

"Forest Disturbance in the Carpathian Ecoregion of Ukraine from 1984 to 2016 Quantified from Landsat Time Series"

Abstract
The Carpathians are the largest contiguous forest ecosystem in Eastern Europe; Ukraine experienced a high harvesting rate in the post-socialist period due to the change of political, societal, and economic structures after early 1990s. In this study, Forest disturbance occurrence was interpreted using the Landsat time series visualization and disturbance data collection software (TimeSync). The goal is to analysis the forest disturbance in the Carpathian Ecoregion of Ukraine in the past thirty years and answer the following two questions: 1) How has the rate of harvest changed during/ after post-socialist period? 2) Are there any other notable type of disturbance in this region like bark beetle or fire?
