EnMAP Core Science Team

Monitoring Vegetation under Global Change

The forthcoming Environmental Mapping and Analysis Program (EnMAP) is a German hyperspectral satellite mission which will provide a means for frequent global sampling of high quality imaging spectroscopy data. Set to launch in 2020, the primary objective of the mission is to investigate a wide range of environmental parameters pertaining to terrestrial ecology, agriculture, forestry, geology, and coastal and inland waters. The focus of the Geomatics Lab within the EnMAP Core Science Team (ECST) is on the monitoring of vegetation ecosystems under global change. Understanding the dynamics of vegetation in space and time is a complex task, and our research aims at improving the characterization of vegetation types, conditions, phenology and disturbances. We make use of simulated multi-temporal EnMAP data covering a wide range of different ecoregions and our analyses focus on the implementation of spatially and temporally generalized empirical machine learning models from generic spectral libraries, as well as potential synergies with Landsat and Sentinel. This project follows ECST phases I & II entitled Natural Ecosystems and Ecosystem Transitions and runs in parallel with the EnMAP-Box project.
