Climate Reconstruction for Nevada, West USA

Announcement for a bachelor's/master's thesis regarding climate reconstruction for Nevada, West USA using dendrochronological methods in cooperation with Section 5.2: Climate Dynamics and Landscape Evolution of the German Research Center for Geosciences Potsdam

Within the scope of this research project the BSc / MSc thesis is to be carried out at the German Research Centre for Geosciences (GFZ)  Potsdam. The project is conducted in close collaboration with the University of Nevada.

Aim:
Newly developed tree‐ring parameters (e.g., cell measurements) of conifers in the western USA are to be used for the first time to  reconstruct selected climatic parameters, e.g. Precipitation. A new
analytical method, recently developed at the GFZ, now simplifies  measurements so that most data are already available.

Requirements:
Basic statistical and English skills are an asset. The focus will be on the time series analysis of the tree‐ring and climatic data, thus basic knowledge in the fields of statistics and botany are of advantage. Knowledge of English is necessary to communicate with our  international staff. The announcement is mainly aimed at students of natural sciences, with a focus on meteorology, physical geography,  forestry or botany.

Start:
Start is negotiable.
