(The Climate Crisis – an invitation for Collective Stewardship of Life Support Systems)

While FridaysForFuture and Extinction Rebellion have put the global climate crisis and biodiversity loss high on the agenda of the public discourse, the warnings about the limits to growth of our current economic model, are more than 50 years old. The widely accepted concept of the Anthropocene suggests that humankind’s impact on Earth will alter the planetary life support system. Yet, although the danger of hothouse Earth is on the horizon, collective behavior change is slow.

The challenge, however, could be turned into an opportunity with a new narrative of modernity. With a fundamental shift in thinking the global political and administrative agenda will look different: from seeing natural resources through a utilitarian lens towards a mindset of care for a planetary support system. Based on transdisciplinary research on systems aliveness and its conditions, the talk will present a novel approach towards collective stewardship (Kuenkel, 2019) of the Earth System. It will outline how it can become the task of policy-makers, scientists, and practitioners at all levels of the global society.
