Climbing the Transdisciplinary Ladder in Messy Socio-Ecological Systems

Deforestation frontiers are socio-ecological systems characterized by highly heterogeneous actors who fiercely compete for land tenure and use within a rapidly changing institutional context. The trajectory of these systems (toward sustainability or otherwise) is influenced by multiple intertwined factors and processes, the study of which requires approaches that transcend disciplinary research and even traditional scientific research. In this talk, I will share research experiences (and their results) in deforestation frontiers of the Argentine Chaco, where the challenges posed by the research problems required the development and application of innovative approaches to data collection, conceptual framing, and knowledge use. Taken together, these experiences illustrate the obstacles and opportunities that arise on the arduous path of climbing the transdisciplinary ladder in messy socio-ecological systems.
