Patent Analysis of Urban Heat Island Mitigation Techniques in Germany

Within the PAUT-project, German patents for urban heat island (UHI) mitigation techniques are analyzed to gain better understanding of urban climate mitigation strategies in Germany. The motivation for this analyisis is a rapid increase in UHI mitigation patent applications in Japan as UHI represents a growing problem for urban climate. The international investigation of mitigation techniques allows for improved future urban climate change mitigation strategies.

Objectives:

  • survey on UHI-related patents
  • organizing information on technologies concerned with mitigation of UHI in Germany
  • analyse and evaluate the effects of different technologies for mitigating UHI in Germany.

Findings of this research will enable suggesting the most efficient technologies for mitigating UHI depending on the climate of the city. The results may provide hints on which further technological developments for mitigating UHI might turn out as adequate and efficient. Finally, the results shall contribute to climate change mitigation and adaptation and the ‘Energiewende’.

Methods:

To achieve the above objectives, we are carrying out a survey based on expert interviews in Germany on patents, green roofs, and other technologies for mitigating UHI. Data obtained from these interviews will be classified according to types or technologies, then analysed and assessed for the effects of mitigating UHI respectively. Data from experiments with UHI-related technologies frome existing studies will be collected in the form of a meta study. These data will be included in the analysis and overall assessment of UHI mitigation technologies in Germany.
