Das Arbeitsgebiet „Angewandte Geographie und Raumplanung“ behandelt geographische Problemstellungen aus einer praxisbezogenen Perspektive. Es befasst sich mit Strategien und Instrumenten der Raumplanung und der raumbezogenen Politiken und untersucht die Schnittstelle zwischen der Produktion geographischen Wissens und seiner Anwendung in Gesellschaft, Wirtschaft, Verwaltung und Politik im Allgemeinen sowie verschiedenen raumbezogenen Berufsfeldern im Besonderen. In der Lehre verfolgt das Arbeitsgebiet das Ziel einer praxisorientierten Ausbildung; thematische Schwerpunkte liegen hier auf der Raumplanung sowie der Stadt- und Regionalentwicklung.Gegenwärtige Arbeitsfelder sind:

- Steuerung räumlicher Entwicklungsprozesse & Planungstheorie
- soziokulturelle Milieus und Potentiale räumlicher Entwicklung

The working group on ‘Applied Geography and Spatial Planning’ deals with geographical issues from a practical perspective. It focuses on strategies and instruments of spatial planning and space-related policies. It likewise explores the interface between the production of geographical knowledge and its application in society, economy, administration and politics as well as in professional fields that deal with geographical problems. As regards teaching, the working group aims at linking education and practice. Thereby a major focus is given to topics of spatial planning and urban and regional development.Current fields of research are:

- Social- cultural milieu and potentials of spatial development
- Migration and urban development
